Geriatric Emergency Medical Services

Course Description

EMTP provides a GEMS course that designed to specifically serve the needs of geriatric patients. Developed by the American Geriatrics Society and the National Council of State EMS Training Coordinators, GEMS is an exciting curriculum designed specifically to help EMS providers address all of the special needs of the older population.

 

The proportion of senior citizens in today’s society is greater than ever before and growing faster than any other segment of our population. Current indications are that approximately 34 percent of calls for emergency medical services, or 3.4 million emergency responses involve patients over the age of 60. GEMS represents the most credible and complete source of pre-hospital medical information for older adults.

The GEMS course is innovative, comprehensive, and highly visual with:

  • Small Group Scenarios

Course Length

Approximately 16 Hours (2 days)

Course Audience

This course is designed for medical providers such as physicians, nurses, state registered nurse aides (SRNAs), paramedics, EMTs, respiratory therapists, and other professionals who may interact with geriatric patients.

Certification

Upon completion of this course you will receive a certificate of completion that is certified by Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services. The certification is valid for two years.
